Boys' Basketball: Deep Bench Domination

Lead by seniors Ben Stewart and Max Holz, the varsity men’s basketball team is continuing their winning ways of last year.
With a 9-3 record, the Sun Devils have proven doubters wrong; even though they lost many talented players from last year’s squad, they can still win.
They have notched impressive victories over 5A schools and nearly beat the 5A perennial powerhouse Smoky Hill. They also beat a strong Colorado Springs Christian team on a last second half-court shot made by Stewart.
Stewart and Holz, two of the few returning varsity players, have proven to be key parts of a young Sun Devil team.
Great basketball, however, has come from many players, young and old.
Stewart, who averages the third highest points per game average, 16.29, in the Metro 3A Conference, was quick to say whose performance has been a fantastic addition to the team.
“Spencer Dunlap has really been a great surprise this year; he’s starting at point (guard) and doing great things,” said Stewart.
Both of the Dunlap brothers are providing production. Holt, a junior, averages 10.71 points per game, complemented by his brother’s freshman talent.
There has been one change in the way the team plays compared to previous Kent teams who enjoyed similar success. While last year’s team relied on a short bench rotation, this year the team spreads playing time to all fourteen players.
With so many players getting time on the court, the team has learned to rely on playing as a unit and not on individuals.
“The number one reason why we’ve been successful is through bonding”, said Coach Todd Schayes. “We have fourteen players, and one through fourteen enjoys playing basketball together.”
Assistant Coach Richard Judd agrees. “The importance of these players coming together…has been a major component and is a main reason why the team is 9-3.”
The Sun Devils seem to share the high hopes everyone has for them as they head into conference play. With a demanding conference schedule with Colorado Academy, Holy Family, Faith and Denver Christian, the coming games may be challenging, but the new brand of basketball at Kent will keep the Sun Devils playing strong through the playoffs.
